If any of the mighty 8th members are interested, the 2010 Defence Force Air Show is on at RAAF Williamtown 18th & 19th Sept. Any guys in the Hunter or visiting the Hunter it should be a great show, if you get excited about things that are loud and fast, like I do. Maybe we could meet up somewhere at the show on one of the days. More about it at http://www.airforce.gov.au/AirShows/
Cheers Stroppy Snow

G'day to all the Mighty 8th. I've just returned from the dedication of the JR's Memorial at Leeuwin. I'm sure that any of you that may make the trip to the West will drop down to Leeuwin and have a look, it's well worth it.
The whole 50th. Anniversary Reunion was a great success and BZ to the organizers. Also attending from our intake were Gary Simons, Rodger Dunne, Sid Czabotar, Japp Bos, Les Giles and John Gunn and a great time was had by all. It was great catching up with you all fellas and I'll look forward to catching up with you all again at our 50th.
Ron.:
Sorry guys, I left out Neil Lewington who also attended with his lovely wife, Lyn.
|
Ron.:
Whoops,it was a big night. Neil's lovely wife's name is Anne. Sincere apologies Anne but you can now see why I didn't attempt the other guys wive's names.

Yesterday I spoke with Helga Benny widow of Pete. Pete died on 10th Jan. He died of cancer. Pete was cremated and his ashes scattered over Pittwater.
Helga told me she has the Gold Card and gets the Widows pension. She did this off her own bat. Pete was a member of TPINSW. I have sent them an email asking them to contact her to ensure she and her family (two boys)are getting what they are entitled to.
Regards to all the M8
Mulvi:
Well done Bob. See you soon!!

Our mini-reunion at Shellharbour workers was attending by the following, Rick & Lynn Watkins, Bill & Alice Harrison, Jim Hill & Betty Armstrong, Rick Foster, Howie Vandevoord, Bob Green, Frank Morrah (flew especially in for the day!!), Alistair Rainford, Gunny, and Denis & Judy Mulvihill. Even though our 50th Anniversary is a few years away, we discussed a few points. First a 'stand-up' committee of Rick & Lynn Watkins, and Bob Green was named. We will not get down to the serious business for another 12 months, but the general 'layout' for the event was put forward. Thursday the 24th April would be a meet & greet day. That night would be the Vietnam Veterans Dinner (Bob Green is the Vice-Pres of the W/gong Section). All march on the 25th for Anzac Day, go back to a venue for afternoon/evening refreshments. Saturday 26th bus trip to the FAA Museum at HMAS Albatross, with our official dinner that night. Sunday would be a departure day for all those concerned. Official Guests/speaker are still to be discussed, as is the venue(s) for all events. Good idea would be to have HMAS Leeuwin in harbour for the event. Other items put forward, was to see if we could get a DVA grant for this 'significant' event. Actions to be taken...Curbs to have a separate 'tag' on our page for all articles regarding our 50th. Rick to get the database from Bob Jeffries, for our last re-union (addresses etc). I have just perused my piece of paper that I jotted things down on, and I cannot find anything else to put here. Will send a pic to Curbs, of the attendees of this min-reunion, for him to place on our page. Anything I missed Rick, get me a call.
Another great day was had. Thanks to Rick & Lynn for organising the day, and for all M8 members, for making it to the club.
Regards,
Denis & Judy
Stroppy Snow:
Thanks Chief

Great photo of the mini-reunion below. I'm working on the problem with photo upload (poor quality on the thumbnail) but if you click on the thumbnail it will come up in full colour. Great to catch up with Frank at Ron Jemesen's funeral in Canberra on Tuesday, also good to see the rest of the boys looking so well - none of you look a day older!
Bob Green:
You will be pleased to know Curbs, and other members of the M8, that ALL the worlds' problems are now solved!!

Have received advice from Kevin Bock (7th intake) that he saw a recent last post notice for Peter Brian Benny R94164 in the RSL magazine. To my knowledge Pete never attended any of our reunions. Does anyone know what happened to him? Another good man down. Lest we forget.
rick watkins:
i saw that in the magazine too curbs cant say that i remember him but he was one of us lest we forget
|
Bob Green:
I am saddened to hear of Pete's passing. We were on Melb. together in 69. He was not happy in pussers. He discharged and the last I heard he was married and living around Frenches Forest (Syd). Pete never attended any reunions--shame. He and Tom Clark were very close until Pete left pussers. We will remember him.
|
Pete Brimacombe:
Sorry to learn of Pete's passing. We had a Frenchs Forrest address for him which is still current in w/p but, I don't believe he ever responded to any reunion invites. Lest we forget.
|
John Curbs:
We used to sleep in alphabetical order in the same area of Kaiber1 - Bawden, Benny, Berryman, Clark and Curbishley (Daniluck was around the corner). I remember Pete well but he kept very much to himself. Never saw him again after Leeuwin.

To all - what goes around does come around. After nearly 40 years Defence, Public Service and Contractor employment at HMAS Albatross in Nowra, I will now finish my employment(Retire one day) from where it all started. I started work as a Unisys Contractor to Defence at Leeuwin Barracks on the 7th April 2010. There are still a few of the old buildings still here, the parade ground is now a carpark but the old gym and sports fields are still here, holes in the fence have been repaired and all tunnels collapsed.
mulvi:
How is it going Daryl? A nice place, WA. If only you knew then, what you know now. Give our regards to any old 'ghosts' that you find!!!!

I am the son of CPO (QMG) H W Owen, probably know to most of you with less than fondness. However that aside, when he passed away, coincidently on the same day, 10 years ago, as his mate CPO Steve Stokoe. I received originals and copies of a number of photos from his Navy days including Garden Island and a number of range shoots and parades. I am not sure which intakes are involved but if someone is interested I will scan and forward what I have, please contact me via my email address towen@webtactix.com.au
